How often do you go to the supermarket? Could you get by with making only one trip per month? What if it saved you money? When people shop more often, they buy more stuff. Supermarkets and grocery stores know this, and that's why they often bury the most common items in the back of the store - so you have to walk through the aisles to get there, and the probability of an impulse purchase goes up![1] Besides making a list and sticking to it, another way to limit your spending is to minimize the amount of time you actually spend in the store. Why make four or more trips per month when you can make just one? That's right--go grocery shopping 12 times a year. It takes time. It also takes organization. Here's how to pull it off.

Steps

Make a list of the things you need, which you should update continually.
- Start saving your receipts. Ideally, you should have all of your shopping receipts from a typical month. Go through them all and highlight the essentials (the stuff you ended up using/eating). Skip over impulse items (you know what they are, like the four cartons of cookies and cream ice cream that was on sale and that you know are incongruent with your dreams of having six-pack abs).
- Plan your meals. Imagine that your home is a restaurant - what is on your menu? You could go all out and plan every meal on a calender (like once-a-month cookers do) but even just thinking of some "master recipes" that can be adapted to several different dishes will help. Take a large amount of cheap, normally tough meat, for example, and put it in a slow cooker until it's tender, then shred it and use it in hot sandwiches, enchiladas, etc.[2]
Accumulate coupons and ads for the things you use and the stores you frequent. During the days before your monthly shopping trip, match sales and discounts to the items on your list.
Divide and conquer. One person tackles the perimeter of the stores (meat, produce, dairy, and baked goods) while someone else scours the center (processed food, household goods, baking supplies). Each monthly shopping trip takes longer than a weekly shopping trip, so a division of labor will make for a smoother shopping trip (with fewer frazzled nerves).
Hit multiple stores. Different stores have different strengths. If you shop every week, it may not make sense to drive all over town to save a few pennies. By shopping just once a month, however, travel costs are diminished.
When you bring the food home, prioritize. Certain produce (grapes, bananas) need to be consumed earlier in the month. Other foods (milk, bread) may need to be frozen.
- If you're concerned about not having a supply of fresh fruits or vegetables, consider growing your own or perusing the local farmers' market for good deals. Or, you can focus on eating fresh fruits and vegetables in the beginning of the month, then eat canned or frozen fruits and veggies towards the end of the month.
- For milk, you have several options.
  - drink fresh milk for the first half of the month
  - freeze milk to drink in the second half of the month
  - powdered milk
  - ultra-pasteurized milk (long shelf life)
  - OR if you like Soy Milk, it lasts for a couple of months! (However, it is much more expensive than regular milk.)
  - Rice Milk is also a good alternative, also lasting a couple of months (You can't even taste the difference after mixing it with cereal or in cooking/baking).
  - Almond Milk is especially healthy.
Evaluate and adapt. When you start off, there will be a little trial and error. There will be some trips to the store to get something you forgot. Just don't let those "emergency trips" become a habit. Make sure that you only come home with the item you needed, and nothing else. Then add that item to your monthly shopping list.

You could utilize a spare closet or a guest bedroom if you have one. Or don't forget about the space underneath kitchen cabinets, or odd drawers and shelves around your living space. Cans and jars can be stored quite safely all over the apartment or house. Just don't forget where you put them!
If you are serious about once a month shopping, then a large freezer would be a good investment. Energy star chest freezers have large capacities and low running costs.[4]
If you are lucky enough to have a greengrocer, small alternative grocer, or grocery co-op nearby, you may be able to shop there without having to contend with many of the "impulse items" or the stress of larger supermarkets. (They're often much like just the perimeter of larger stores, without the junky innards.)
If you live near a drive through dairy you can have fresh milk as needed without going into a store.

Warnings

Leave younger children with a babysitter. You can save time and money by leaving younger children at home instead of letting them distract you from the task at hand. Older children, however, can actually help.
Check expiration dates on coupons.

Thrift stores are an amazing resource for getting great, high-quality, unique and inexpensive clothes and other household items. Often, the offerings are perfectly good things that somebody else has outgrown or simply grown tired of.

Steps

Find thrift stores and secondhand stores in your area. Big cities tend to have more of them but you can find these stores in just about any town.
Decide why you are going. Are you just looking for cute stuff in general or do you have something in mind?
Start looking. Some stores are more organized than others. After you have been to a few you'll know which ones are better than others. Understand the system if you can. You may find things organized by gender, type of clothes, color and size, or you may find just a mass of clothes and household objects. Start with the more organized stores until you become proficient at looking through clothes.
Pick up anything that catches your eye and possibly try it on in the dressing room. If you don't like the idea of putting someone elses clothes on before washing them, buy whatever you think will look nice, wash the items at home, and re-donate them as needed.
Don't forget the other items in a thrift store. If you need to furnish an apartment inexpensively, for instance, thrift stores can be an excellent source of dishes, pots and pans, and even furnishings. Don't forget to look for a good deal on an attractive bedspread to cover up a comfortable but unsightly sofa. You might even find that shopping in a thrift store is less costly than moving items or renting furniture. You also can find awesome decor for your room, like posters, pictures, trinkets and more.
- It might not all match, but that can be a great thing. Go for an eclectic look, instead. If you'd like mixed pieces to have a bit more unity, try painting, covering, or refinishing them.
If you love to read, browse through the book selection. Used books are often very inexpensive, but many of the books found in relatively low-traffic thrift shops are beat up. Make sure a book isn't missing any pages before buyin it- a simple flip-through works well enough.
Check out the accessories. You'll find belts, purses, luggage, shoes, hats, and even jewelry (usually the costume variety) at a fraction of their regular prices.
Watch for bargains. Many thrift stores have sales or clearance racks to unload items that have not sold in some time. Also, keep a look out for store-wide sales, such as student discount day or others. Most thrift shops will have signs up for these events.
Before buying an item, take a good look at it. Did somebody get rid of it for an obvious reason, or is it in good shape? Is it stained? Does it have any holes or tears that can't be easily fixed?
- Certain items, such as can openers, are very seldom donated unless they're not working.
- Clothing, by contrast, is frequently discarded simply because it no longer fits or flatters its original owner, or simply because it's last year's style. Do, however, look over it for obvious damage such as a stain or tear.
If the thrift store has a make-up or underwear section, feel free to bypass them without guilt. Many people aren't comfortable with wearing used underwear, and makeup my be incredibly old.
As for music, most shops have lots of old CD's and records. Be forewarned, though- most of the music is awful. A good catch is rare, but make sure the CD isn't scratched or otherwise obviously damaged.

Tips

Tailoring is generally less expensive than you would imagine. For men especially, there is no finer feeling than buying a Jos. Banks or Brooks Bros. suit for $10, having it professionally cleaned and tailored ($60-$100) and then walking around in $1000 worth of suit.
Keep your personal style in mind. Thrift stores can be great for this because you are not limited to this year's colors and styles.
Try thrift stores for your next Halloween or drama costume. You just might find a real poodle skirt, trench coat, or other treasure.
Be creative and open-minded. Go with what's available and think about how you can work it in or adapt it to your needs.
Some thrift stores have bag or baskets for you to put your stuff in, but others don't, so make sure to bring a big bag. Clothes can be heavy!
Wait for people to compliment you on your finds. If anybody asks where you got something, you can reply, "I know this exclusive boutique in downtown."
A quick way to size the waist of pants, skirts, etc. is to fasten the button or snap, then stretch the waistline between your belly button and your spine. If it reaches, it has a good chance of being large enough. You should still try the garment on for fit, if you can or want to, but this simple check will help you eliminate quickly those items that are certain to be much too tight or loose.
If you know some basic sewing, you can plan to mend small holes, reattach a lost button, or take up a hem, but be realistic about whether you have the time, energy, and know-how to tackle such a project. You can even buy something and edit it to make it totally your own.
Since they're plentiful and inexpensive, thrift store finds can also make great raw material for other projects, ranging from quilts to jeans you've torn yourself. If you're crafty and creative, the sky is the limit.
Know what prices similar items fetch in retail stores and, by way of comparison, at garage sales in your area. Occasionally, thrift stores will misjudge something, and there's no point in paying retail prices for used goods.
Thrift stores are a great source for children's clothing and toys, because kids often outgrow stuff long before they wear it out.
Many of the same techniques apply to garage sales. Like garage sales, thrift stores can be great sources of bargains. Unlike garage sales, you have a wider selection in one place. Often the prices will be somewhat higher, though still much better than you would pay if you purchased something new.
Look for hidden potential in items. Would an item be stunning after you clean it, polish it, work it into the right arrangement, or fix it up a bit?
Be prepared to dig! Thrift shops are full of items and may are disorganized. Don't be discouraged by this, because if you dig, you can find some fabulous pieces.

At first, just go to one store at a time. Thrift shopping can be tiring.
If people ask where they can get what you have, say that they can't. Stuff you get from thrift stores is almost always one-of-a-kind!

While most thrift store clothing is perfectly safe to use, you don't know where it's been, and it will help to remove any stale, leftover odors. Sterilize second-hand earrings by dipping them in rubbing alcohol and letting them dry thoroughly.
Used furniture can contain lots of dustmites. Every piece of furniture that's been used has them, but depending on how old something is, it may be much heavier than it used to be.

It is estimated that between 70 and 80% of women wear the wrong bra size. What does this mean? It means that not only are you not getting the correct support, you are also getting noticed and not in a good way.

You should be remeasured every 3-5 years. Your size can change due to childbirth, weight change or just plain aging.
Bra fits can vary according to manufacturer or even within a manufacturer. This means, try it on before your buy it.
Find the correct style for your body. Full breasted women need full coverage. Otherwise, you'll fall out or marks will show.When you find the correct style, go with it.

The bra's band shouldn't ride up in the back. If it does, the bra is too big.
As for band size, which provides 90 percent of a bra's support:

If you wear a size 4 0r 6 top you wear a size 32
8 or 10 top, you likely wear a size 34 bra;
a 12 or 14 top needs a 36

Straps only provide a small amount of the support. Don't over tighten them. If they fall off your shoulders, they're too loose.If they dig in and leave marks, they're too tight.
If your breasts are two different sizes, and this is true for most of us, fit the larger breast.

It seems like for years we have been giving dad a tie for father's day.
It has been sort of like a tradition.
The one thing that is always okay to get the most impossible person in the world to shop for.
Ties always fit and there is not much to getting one that will match anything in mind.

Over the years, we have seen ties go from thin to fat to bowed to ascot to clip-op (Bar Mitzvah/Communion circuit?) and back to thin again.

Now for the bad news just in time for Father's Day.
The Wall Street Journal recently reported that, after 60 years, the Men's Dress Furnishings Association – the trade group that represents American tie makers – is shutting down.

"Association members now number just 25, down from 120 during the 1980s power-tie era. U.S. tie companies have been consolidating. Others have closed because of overseas competition as the U.S. market share for American-made ties has fallen to about 40 per cent, from 75 per cent in 1995," the association says.

The biggest reason for the group's demise: "Men aren't wearing ties."
Could this mean the end of Father's Day?
Will this mean that we must find something new for day that fits and matches?

According to a recent Gallup poll, the number of men who wore ties to work last year dropped to a record low of 6 per cent, down from 19 per cent in 2002.

"Although sales are expected to get a bump around Father's Day (Sunday) the future of neckties is very much in doubt."

"Historically, the guy wearing the navy suit, the white shirt and the burgundy tie would be the CEO. Now he's the accountant," commented Marty Staff, chief executive of men's clothing company JA Apparel Corp. "Power is being able to dress the way you want."

No, no, no.

If you were to get a tie for dad, what would it look like?
I mean, maybe ties will be back neck, I mean , next year?

In case you care, it has been reported, that if men were to wear a tie, it would be a slim one.

Macy's recently resized its men's ties; now a tie that had traditionally been 4 inches at its widest will shrink to 3 1/2 inches.

Today's ties are a major shift from the 4-inchers of decades past, when skinny neckwear was reserved for Hollywood.

And the shift comes as the icon of men's fashion — the tie — makes a comeback. Huh?

Unlike their wider counterparts, slimmer ties add youth and flatter even larger waistlines, he says. Still, 1-inch ties aren't for everybody, either. Men care a lot about slimming, we all know that...

From suits to lapels, men's fashion is slimming across the board. For an extra kick to dad's wardrobe, consider pairing a gift of a slimmer tie with one of the newer, more fitted shirts.

You know, in reality, every man needs at least one tie.
It could be used over and over again for work, job interviews, funerals, wedding, and whatever you may need one tie for once a year.

Their major findings:

* The goods are good. Seventy-seven percent of outlet shoppers said the merchandise was of the quality of what they bought at full-price stores.

*57 percent said the selection was as good or better than at regular stores.

* Only one-third of survey respondents said outlet prices were substantially below sale prices at regular stores.

* Chains that sell kitchen goods were among the top-rated overall.

* VF Outlets (apparel), Coach (handbags and accessories), Lenox and Pfaltzgraff (dinnerware), and Saks Off 5th (clothing) offered exceptional discounts over the prices charged at regular stores for those brands, survey respondents said.

* Outlets seldom carry the same merchandise as full-price stores, catalogs, and Web sites.

A big secret here is that at the Gap family the outlet stores feature items made solely for those stores .
* In general, outlets carry goods appropriate for the season, but they may be a year behind current styles and colors.

* Thirty-five percent of respondents encountered at least one problem, such as crowds, long lines, unattractive stores, or a shortage of fitting rooms.

Once again, here are some tips to get the right one for you.

1. Don't look at the labels. I am talking about the size and price. Well, the price one is is okay to look at before you purchase the suit, but if it's a really good bargain that should not necessarily be the reason to purchase the suit.

2. Many experts suggest that you go up a size. Most suits are cut small and by going up a size you'll get better coverage.
3. Try on as many as possible in a variety of styles. You never know.
4. Don't be too critical of your self in the mirror. Swimsuit models are airbrushed and covered in makeup.

Caring for your suit.

- Use a mild detergent and wash it especially after being in a pool containing chemicals.
- Hand wash, do not machine wash
-Use cold water to wash.

The Growing Wealth Gap

As many Americans watch personal investments like their homes go belly up, many of the super rich have seen their fortunes grow.

"The median income in America is still around $48,000, and that's been flat for about the last 10 years," said Frank. "Meanwhile, the top 1 percent of Americans control 33 percent of the wealth. That top 1 percent owns $17 trillion in wealth, which for perspective, is greater than the GDPs of Japan, Germany, the U.K. and France combined."

Even the top 1 percent's dogs live well.

But even Warren Buffett -- the world's richest man whose estimated wealth hovers around $60 billion -- worries about the burgeoning wealth gap.

"My tax rate is courtesy of the U.S. Congress, and the people that pay very high taxes like my cleaning lady, who pays more on her payroll tax than I pay on capital gains," Buffett said. "This has been a prosperity that has been great for the super rich, and it's been bad for the middle class and I think that should be changed."

If a stay-at-home mom could be compensated in dollars rather than personal satisfaction and unconditional love, she'd rake in a nifty sum of nearly $117,000 a year according to a pre-Mother's Day study released by Salary.com.

The eighth annual survey calculated a mom's market value by studying pay levels for 10 job titles with duties that a typical mom performs, ranging from housekeeper and day care center teacher to van driver, psychologist and chief executive officer.

This year, the annual salary for a stay-at-home mom would be $116,805, while a working mom who also juggles an outside job would get $68,405 for her motherly duties.

One stay-at-home mom said the six-figure salary sounds a little low.

The biggest driver of a mom's theoretical salary is the amount of overtime pay she'd receive for working more than 40 hours a week. The 18,000 moms surveyed about their typical week reported working 94.4 hours -- meaning they'd be spending more than half their working hours on overtime.

Working moms reported an average 54.6 hour work week besides the hours they spent at paying jobs.

(E! Online) is reporting that Project Runway's Nina Garcia is searching for the latest look—in employment. Word has it, Elle magazine's recently ousted fashion consultant might just be heading to Harper's Bazaar.

Will that mean Runway winners get a spread in Harper's Bazaar instead of Elle? Could this be part of the show's potential move from Bravo to Lifetime? And can plaids be matched with other prints? Oh, the questions we have.

REBATES START MONDAY: Treasury is ahead of schedule.

The tax rebates — ranging from $300 to $600, or up to $1,200 for married couples who file jointly — will be available to some direct-deposit taxpayers as early as Monday, though checks by mail will take longer. Many parents will receive an additional $300 per child.

Wal-Mart, the largest U.S. retailer, says it plans to announce a tax-rebate-related program within a few days.

•Supervalu, parent company of Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shop 'n Save and other grocery chains, says shoppers will be able to exchange tax-rebate checks for store gift cards, with an extra $30 added for every $300 in rebate checks. The offer will be valid through July 31.

•Sears will also give customers an additional return if they spend their entire rebate on a gift card, for use at Sears, Kmart or Lands' End stores. From May 14 to July 19, customers can cash in the rebates for a gift card in the amount of the check plus 10%. The gift cards carry no expiration dates or fees.

•Similarly, Kroger grocery stores will add 10% to the value of rebate checks when customers use them in $300 increments to buy Kroger gift cards. Customers with a rebate check worth more than $300 but less than $600 would get a $330 Kroger gift card and the rest of their rebate back.

•Staples is using promotions to urge small-business owners to spend their rebates. Until May 4, it's offering $50 off purchases of $500 or more and $150 off furniture costing at least $1,000. Through June 30, for purchases of more than $499 with a Staples credit card, the store will charge no interest and require no payments for six months.

•Home Depot is urging customers to use rebates to invest in the environment and cut energy bills. It'll offer discounts through July on compact fluorescent light bulbs and Energy Star appliances. That helps "take a short-term stimulus and turn it into a long-term investment," spokeswoman Jean Niemi says.

It is the big attraction for many visitors to New York City's Chinatown. U.S. Customs and Border Protection maintains an aggressive Intellectual Property Rights enforcement program which devotes substantial resources to target, intercept, detain, seize and forfeit shipments of IPR-violative goods. Their enforcement is accomplished through the cooperative efforts of our trained enforcement personnel, other government agencies, and the trade community.

Federal investigators have traced the proceeds from the Chinatown counterfeits to a dangerous underground economy -- an economy thriving on sales to purse party dealers from America's nicest neighborhoods. WE have all been invited to the parties that seem inviting and innocent on the invitations.

The reality is that these parties may be supporting organized crime. They are also hurting the economy.

In the past, federal prosecutors have indicted members of New York's crime families for a number of racketeering offenses, including trafficking in counterfeit handbags.Even more frightening was evidence developed by the FBI's joint terrorism task force that the sale of counterfeit goods financed the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Teens turn to thrift as jobs vanish and prices rise

The AP is reporting that the souring job market and rising costs of the usual teenage indulgences — a slice of pizza, a drive to the mall, the hottest new jeans — are causing teens to do something they rarely do: be thrifty.

It's a far cry from the freewheeling spending of recent years, when teens splurged on $100 Coach wristlet handbags, $60 Juicy Couture T-shirts and $80 skinny jeans from Abercrombie & Fitch.

Now jobs for teens are less plentiful, and parents who supply the allowances are feeling the economic pinch themselves.

The stalwart retailers of teen apparel, such as Abercrombie and American Eagle Outfitters Inc., are reporting sluggish sales, defying the myth that teen spending is recession-proof: It holds up longer, but can eventually fold.

It's even becoming cool to be frugal.

Last week, Ellegirl.com, the teen offshoot of Elle magazine, launched a new video fixture called Self-Made Girl, which shows teens how to make clothes and accessories. The first video offers tips on how to create a prom clutch.

"It's a little tacky in the economic unrest to tote a big logo bag," said Holly Siegel, the site's senior editor. She said it's no longer about teens "one-upping each other," but rather where they can get it cheap.

Victoria Bradley, a 16-year-old from Springfield, Mo., says the $80 she earns each month from baby-sitting is being eaten up by more expensive school lunches, late-night snacks with friends and stylish clothes.

Now, she says, she and her friends head for the thrift store or just browse at the mall.

"I used to be able to buy a T-shirt and jeans every couple of months," Victoria said, adding some of her friends are even "making their own clothes or altering their old ones to fit or look better."

Victoria's mother, Michelle Bradley, said she and her husband cut back spending on themselves last year, and early this year also started paring back "frivolous" buying for their three girls.

"We have made a conscious effort to not use credit cards," said Bradley, who stopped paying for Victoria's text messages last month. The top priority is school supplies and choir fees.

The job market for teens isn't what it used to be, either: Nathan Reeser, a Cincinnati 15-year-old, lost his job making pizza four months ago and has had to cut back on spending. He's shopping more at Target and less at Abercrombie & Fitch's Hollister stores.

"Now, I just get money from my parents, but they don't have as much because of taxes and everything else," he said.

Teen hiring has slumped by 5 percent since March 2007, with many mom-and-pop stores, which typically hire younger workers, laying off employees. Hiring in the overall job market fell by just 0.1 percent during the same period.

That's still not as bad as the 13 percent drop in teen hiring in the early 1990s. That means that if the larger job market mirrors the last teen hiring slump, "we're not out of the woods," said Michael P. Niemira, chief economist at the International Council of Shopping Centers.

Economists say this teen spending slump could be the worst in 17 years, when teen frugality led to the demise of once-hot Merry-Go-Round Enterprises Inc. and ushered in an era of flannel shirts and torn jeans.

Last month, teen retailers suffered an 8 percent drop in sales at established stores. The good news is that the under-20 crew is still spending on tech gadgets like iPods, cell phones and headsets, analysts say.

What makes this slump different, says Deloitte Research chief economist Carl Steidtmann, is the soaring cost of basics such food and gas, which have a direct impact on younger consumers.

Gas could reach $4 a gallon this summer, and prices for teen favorites like pizza and potato chips have all climbed, squeezing the amount of cash teens can spend elsewhere.

Sales at teen retailers open at least a year averaged a 0.5 percent decline last year, compared to a 3.3 percent increase in 2006 and a 12.1 percent gain in 2005, according to a UBS-International Council of Shopping Centers tally.

Retailers like American Eagle and Tween Brands Inc., which operates Limited Too, have cut their earnings outlooks amid deeper-than-expected sales declines. Abercrombie & Fitch reported a disappointing 10 percent sales drop in March, while Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. announced earlier this year it was shuttering its urban-inspired Demo stores.

Among the few bright spots is Aeropostale Inc., whose jeans are about 30 percent cheaper than Abercrombie & Fitch. Candace Corlett, principal at consulting firm WSL Strategic Retail, said low-price chains like H&M and Steve & Barry's should do well.

And Urban Outfitters Inc., which operates its namesake stores and the Anthropologie brand, has held up well. Trend experts believe that's because it has a thrift-store feel.

Secondhand clothing chains have seen business surge this year as teens and their parents buy popular brands like Gap, Banana Republic and Juicy Couture at a fraction of the regular price.

Kerstin Block, president and co-founder of Buffalo Exchange, a Tucson, Ariz.-based chain that sells second-hand clothing, said Gap jeans there run $9 to $20. A new pair runs $50 to $60. Block noted that buying second-hand is also appealing to a growing eco-friendly sentiment among teenagers.

"It is way cooler to get a super deal on that shirt rather than being able to spend the most money on something," said Anna D'Agrosa, director of Consumer Insights at The Zandl Group, a market research company focusing on teens. "Kids are becoming really aware of what is happening to their economy and to their families."

Call it what you want — a recession or not, there's no question Americans are looking to get more bang for their buck... and cash is king. While there are online scams offering "get rich quick" schemes or promising tax refunds (one of the most popular "phishing" scams), there are also some savvy, legitimate resources worth taking advantage of. Here are five sites that can put $50 in your pocket fast:

Grocery prices are up almost across the board. People are really feeling it when you consider food accounts for about 15% of the average household budget. Rising prices are in large part driven by wheat — up 44%. Cereal is one of the most obvious examples, since wheat makes up about 24% of the total cost of goods for cereal. One of the ways cereal makers are hiding the price increase is to make the box smaller. Consumers are paying as much as 36% more than last year for common kitchen staples, like eggs, bread, milk, and chicken.

Money saving blog WalletPop breaks down where your food budget is seeing the biggest hit. According to WalletPop, grocery prices are up substantially from this time last year. Orange juice is up 13.3% and lunch staples like American sliced cheese, up 8.3%; peanut butter, up 9.4%; and potato chips, up 7%. If you drink cola with your lunch, that's up, too, 12.4% year-over-year.

An obvious way to get around rising grocery costs is to stick to a list, so you avoid impulse buys — and above all, play the coupon game. You can print coupons at home from sites like couponmom.com. Manufacturers want you to have these, but only if you need them to pick their product — that's retail 101.

Also, shopping once per week would yield $50 a month in savings. If your store doubles coupons, $100. And this is conservative. True bargain bees are all over this site — a quarter million of them are regular users.

Coupon shortcuts on the way: Soon, you won't even have to print coupons. A new technology will launch later this month (www.shortcuts.com) in which you'll select the coupons you want and they'll instantly be transmitted to your grocery membership card (81% of people have these). It's like turbo-charging your card with extra savings. It is expected that even sometimes coupon-shy men will get in on the action.

Coupons on demand: You heard it here first — coupons can be requested & downloaded right to your cellphone and you'll scan it across the scanner. Acuity Mobile (www.AcuityMobile.com) debuted a prototype on TODAY. Think of it as coupons on-demand.

The phone must be able to power up and complete a call and you'll need to send in the charger as well. Cellforcash.com will mail you a check within 30 days. The site takes the old phones, refurbishes them and resells them in developing countries. It's a win, win.

Essentially, you'd be getting "discounted cash." If the dishwasher is $300, that's $30 off right off the bat before any other sales or discounts the retailer may offer.

To use Mapquest's Gas Prices feature, type in an address or zip code and it will give you gas stations with the lowest prices within a 50 mile radius. The stations appear plotted on a map. In a given area prices (updated up to 7 times a day) range by as much as 50 cents per gallon.

By BLOOMBERG NEWS and the New York Times are reporting that vacancies at community and neighborhood shopping centers in the United States rose in the first quarter to the highest level in more than a decade, and rent growth was the lowest since the last recession, the research firm Reis reported on Friday.

The average vacancy rate rose to 7.7 percent from 7.1 percent a year earlier. It was the highest since 1996, the real-estate researcher said. Demand for retail space is being hurt by a drop in home prices and sales, rising food and gasoline costs, and job cuts, Reis said. (BLOOMBERG NEWS)

We all love to shop at those outlet malls. Sawgrass Mills in Florida is said to be the second most popular tourist attraction in the state (you can easily guess who is number one).

Is it worth your while to hit the outlets?
Generally, you can fine the quality that you are looking for. It may not always be at the lowest price that they should be at. However, you can save money over shopping at full-price at a department store (who does that these days?).

Consumer Reports seem to think that the best places to pick up a value and quality item are: Lenox, L.L. Bean, Mikasa, and OshKosh B’gosh.

What will you find at an outlet mall?
First of all, every store is different. In a mall of 100 stores, there may be 2 or three that are just a regular retail store. You’ll find at least one dollar store (gotta make the kids happy). The remainder of the stores will be an outlet for a retail chain or manufacturer.

Most of the stores will carry irregulars and post season items. This may be a good thing if you meant to purchase something but, forgot to . You will find good quality items for the most part.

Outlets very seldom carry the same merchandise as full-price stores. The Gap Outlet, Banana Republic Factory Store, and Old Navy Outlet, may carry items that were made solely for those stores.

The downside of outlet shopping may be less than perfect shopping experience. This may be due to crowds, long lines, unattractive stores, messy aisles, lack of shopping carts or a shortage of fitting rooms.

In America there are three developers who account for about 40 percent of all malls: Chelsea, which attaches “Premium Outlets” to its 44 U.S. shopping centers; Tanger, with 31 centers; and Prime, with 27.

Where is the best place in America to hit the outlet malls?
ORLANDO! They have many, many malls to choose from. The selection is continuously growing too. Of the big three developers mentioned above, you’ll see them there, and a couple have more than one.

Tips on Outlet Mall Shopping

What days of the week are the best for outlet shopping?
Midweek,Tuesday through Thursday are the best days to shop. There are fewer people around and the shelves have been restocked since the weekend rush. Avoid the weekends. Especially if you pull up to the lot and there are tour buses in it.

What time of day is the best for shopping?

Get there as soon as the mall opens. The merchandise will be neatly arranged and available. The worst time for shopping is between noon and 3 p.m.

Other tips;

Go online and find a mall map. Map out your strategy for shopping.
Know the difference between a ‘factory store’ and a ’store outlet’ if you are interested in purchasing items that were not especially made for the factory outlet.
Outlets follow the same holiday calendar as regular stores.
Look for coupons online or at an information desk at the mall.
Seek other discounts, such as from AAA or AARP.
Shop for out-of-season items.
Notice the bags that other shopper are carrying. This can give you a clue as to who has the big bargain of the hunt.
Take note of return policies.They may be different from regular stores.
